💵 Tolls & Parking

AutoDrive spots toll roads along your recorded routes and prompts you to confirm the charge, then files it with the trip as a deductible expense. Add parking the same way — and the deductible total rolls into your reports.

Tolls & Parking captures the out-of-pocket trip costs a mileage deduction misses. When a drive’s recorded GPS route crosses a known toll facility, AutoDrive automatically creates an unconfirmed toll expense for you to review — no receipt or transponder feed needed. You can also log tolls and parking by hand. Every charge is classified business or personal, flagged deductible or not, and the deductible total flows straight into your reports.

Where to find it

In AutoDrive Online, open Logbook › Tolls & Parking in the sidebar. The page has three parts: a metrics strip (toll spend, parking spend, deductible total, and how many were auto-detected), a “Needs review” inbox of the charges AutoDrive detected for you, and the full ledger of every toll and parking expense.

How auto-detection works

When a trip finishes, AutoDrive checks whether its route passed through any toll plaza it knows about. If it did, a toll expense is created with the plaza’s typical amount as an estimate and the trip’s own business/personal classification — and it lands in your Needs review inbox. Detection is idempotent: re-syncing or editing the same trip never creates a duplicate.

Parking is detected a different way. A toll is matched where your route passes through a plaza; parking is matched where your trip ends — when a drive finishes with a dwell inside a known paid-parking zone, AutoDrive drops an unconfirmed parking expense in the same inbox with the amount left blank for you to fill in.

Reviewing a detected charge

  • Confirm — accept it as-is.
  • Edit — fix the amount (the estimate is just a starting point), classification, or deductibility, then save (saving also confirms it).
  • Dismiss — remove a detection that doesn’t belong (e.g. a toll road you were only near).

Review reminders

So detected charges don’t pile up unnoticed, AutoDrive sends a periodic “to review” digest while you have tolls or parking awaiting confirmation. It arrives by push, email, and in-app (the bell icon) at most about once a week — never one nag per charge. Choose channels, or set quiet hours, under Settings › Tolls Reminders; these are independent of your AutoCare, Glovebox, and Permit reminders.

Adding tolls & parking yourself

Use Add expense for anything AutoDrive didn’t catch — a parking garage, a cash toll, a bridge fare. Pick the type, enter the amount and date, choose business or personal, and (optionally) link it to a trip. Manual entries are confirmed immediately and never sit in the review inbox.

Deductibility & reports

By default a business-classified charge is marked deductible and a personal one isn’t — you can override either. The deductible toll/parking total appears on the per-trip Drive Details page, in the Report Builder (a dedicated Tolls & Parking block, plus the Deductible Mileage and Cost Breakdown blocks), and in the IRS-deductible and actual-expense report presets. Tolls and parking are deductible on top of the standard mileage rate — the per-mile rate doesn’t cover them.

Accuracy & privacy

Because a toll is inferred from your trip’s GPS route rather than a billing feed, the amount is always an estimate you confirm — you’re in control of every figure that reaches a report. Detected charges stay private to your account; nothing is shared anywhere.
