Four columns the IRS expects
The standard rate is simple; the recordkeeping is where most filers get caught short. A reconstructed-at-year-end log is weaker evidence than one filled out as you drive.
- Date — when the trip happened.
- Destination — where you went, with enough detail to identify the trip later.
- Business purpose — a short phrase tying the trip to your business.
- Miles driven — either as start/end odometer or as a total for the trip.
Bookend it with your odometer reading on January 1 and December 31 so the totals can be cross-checked. That's the whole IRS recordkeeping standard — there's no special form, no submission requirement; you just need to be able to produce the log if asked.
Or skip the paperwork entirely
AutoDrive captures all four columns automatically — date, route, miles, and (after one tap) purpose. End-of-year report is one tap from done.
